Top of KAZBEK
Kazbek (5047m), one of the highest and most beautiful mountaintops, locates in the eastern part of the central mountain range. This is one of the most important places of mountaineering and trekking. There are nine glaciers there. The mountain is considered to be quite difficult and the beginners should take the top as a bonus, where one may reach or not, because in ascending one should consider such circumstances as weather and the feeling of the members of the group.
At the same time reaching the last base camp (4300 m) is manageable to everyone and it offers enchanting sights to the main range of the Caucasus.

The aim of the tourism expedition is to conquer the mountain if the weather permits.

                                         THE   PROGRAM  OF THE TRIP
has been drawn up by Alar on the base of his experience
/ extract from the notes of Alar Sikk/
The man who himself has repeatedly conquered Kazbek

Before the tour there will be briefing at agreed time and place depending on the home state of  interested people!

Expedition to Georgia, to the mountain range of the Caucasus, takes place by plane, by coach and on foot.
The departure for Tbilisi, the capital of a mountainous country, starts from Tallinn or Helsinki.

On the first day
the members of the group will get together either in Estonia or in Finland.
Those who start their tour from Tallinn will meet in the pub “Seiklusjutte maalt ja merelt” There equipment control and the discussion about the forthcoming tour will take place.
According to the custom of the pub each member of the expedition group will be offered a shot of vodka and a Baltic sprat sandwich.
By plane: Tallinn- Tbilisi- Tallinn or Helsinki- Tbilisi- Helsinki.
Leri, the guide will be waiting for the group at Tbilisi airport. He will be with us all the tour.  Leri is an experienced mountaineer, one of the real mountain men. He has conquered Kazbek about thirty times.
We will be taken to Kazbek village by bus. The bus ride runs its course along the famous Georgia´s war route.
Arrival is in three hours. We will be 1700 m above the sea level.
Our rooms will be waiting for us at Lela´s place and she will have prepared meal for us too.
We will eat our supper and go to bed.

In the morning of the second day- awakening, taking the shower, having breakfast. From the village shop some food and drink will be bought for the expedition. In the evening everyone will have free time and later has to pack one´s things.

In the morning of the third day – awakening, having breakfast.
The beginning of the trek. Some of the equipment will be taken by the horses to the first base camp. We will go on foot to the agreed stopping place at the church. Then a serious journey to the first base camp will start. Walking tour takes approximately four hours. The landscape may be unpredictable- either deep snow or beautiful Alpine meadow. Sights to the mountains are picturesque. We can walk calmly and there will be several short breaks during the tour. At the end of the day we will reach the first base camp that locates at the height of 2,900 m. We will set up our tents and prepare supper. Then there will be free time.

In the morning of the fourth day we will prepare breakfast, pack our things into our rucksacks because horses cannot help us any more. We will be on our way six hours. During that time we will cross the safe wide lower glacier. At the end of the day there will be one serious ascent, after which we will arrive at Meteostantsija (3,600 m). This is an old Stalin´s time weather station building, where there are bunks and a room where meal can be prepared. This is the base camp of Kazbek conquerors before reaching the top.

The fifth day is the day of acclimatization. This day we will ascend about two hours up to 4,150 m. The ascent testing is a very good indicator of the state of one´s health. This shows who will be able to reach the top.

The sixth day is the peak day. We will control the weather at night. If it is suitable for the ascent, then we will leave with full equipment at three a. m. After having moved two hours,
before reaching the glacier, we will rope each other together. Before the sunrise we have to be  on the 4,500 m high plateau. Moving on from the plateau the elevation angle changes ca 45°.At about 11a.m. we must have reached the “saddle”, from where the last ascent starts. Now the elevation angle is already 60°. It will still take a good hour and we will be at the top of Kazbek.
If the weather is good we will see Elbrus, the highest peak of the Caucasus. During a half – an - hour stop we will take some photos from the top and pose in the background of the mountains. After that there will be a fast- paced return to the base camp Meteostantsija.

In the morning of the seventh day we will start our return trek to Kazbek village. It takes approximately 5 hours to reach there. Lela will have prepared warm meal for us. Free time follows.
The eighth day. After breakfast the coach takes us to Tbilisi. We will be accommodated in the hotel. Free time follows. It is possible to visit a native and original sauna. It is very good!
The most important part of the evening is the rewarding of those who reached the top.

The ninth day.
Our plane from the capital of the mountains, Tbilisi, starts for Tallinn or Helsinki. If the landing is in Tallinn, the traditional termination of the expedition will take place in the pub “Seiklusjutte maalt ja merelt” where we will be offered a shot of vodka and a Baltic sprat sandwich.
